Current BSS/OSS systems are ill-equipped to cope. Almost half (47%) of respondents said their prepaid plans would require moderate to major changes to their installed platforms. The biggest problem, they said, will be inability of their applications to support rapid introduction of new offerings. Two-thirds of carriers are already in the process of making changes to accommodate new prepaid services, and nearly all the rest plan such changes in 2012-2013. Also, 38% have deployed a convergent charging system or are in negotiations to buy one, while a further 23% plan to implement one within five years.
"To remain competitive, service providers must go to market quickly with new prepaid and hybrid services and need a charging environment that can provide this required agility and flexibility," commented Rebecca Prudhomme, VP of product and solutions marketing at Amdocs.
