Hong Kong giant Hutchison Whampoa has been a significant disruptive force in the 3G market, though its '3' operations in Europe and Australia are still to make a sustained profit. Undeterred, it is pushing ahead into 4G and looks set to work closely with Chinese vendors Huawei and ZTE.
The largest Chinese firms are finding it hard to ride on the US LTE wave, because of alleged security concerns, but they are making strong progress in other developed economies, expanding from their traditional heartlands in their homeland and in emerging markets. The Hi3G units in Sweden and Denmark are to work with both Huawei and ZTE, but this is thought to be part of a broader deal that will cover all the 3 units as they start to roll out next generation networks.
Like other carriers, 3 is focusing first on the cutting edge Nordic region, where TeliaSonera already has several LTE networks in operation, and Telenor and Tele2 are rolling out in Sweden via their joint venture Net4Mobility. It will use the Chinese vendors to deploy networks in 2.6GHz, with reports indicating that ZTE will initially deploy 500 base stations in Sweden, with expansion to 1,000 later, while Huawei will focus on Denmark. 3 Sweden has 2x10MHz of paired spectrum and is waiting for regulatory clearance to acquire 50MHz of TDD frequencies from Intel. Hi3G Denmark has 2x10MHz of FDD and 25MHz of TDD spectrum at 2.6GHz.
