Juniper-NSN venture gets ready for 100G transport

Partners demonstrate interoperability between NSN's optical network and Juniper's routers

Hard on the heels of Juniper's radical reworking of its core network strategy last week, the firm is attacking the threat from Alcatel-Lucent from another angle, via its joint venture with Nokia Siemens in the transport market. The partners have demonstrated 100Gbps Ethernet links, and interoperability between NSN's Optical Transport Network (OTN) and Juniper's T1600 core router. This should lead to 100G products later this year, at the very beginning of carrier moves to support this platform in their transport networks.

Last year, there was talk that NSN was going cool on its Juniper venture when it got close to Cisco routers in another market, microwave backhaul. But the two-year old JV looks strong, with the German trials of the native 100G Ethernet interface, which will also be demonstrated at this week's OFC/NFOEC conference in Los Angeles. The tests involve NSN's hiT 7300 DWDM platform, which will be upgraded from 40Gbps to 100Gbps by the middle of 2011, addressing wireline and wireless operators' transport requirements.

"Carriers are seeing huge increases in Ethernet and IP traffic, but even as you look at that exponential growth curve, revenues are flat. That applies pressure throughout the supply chain: how do we scale bandwidth but still keep costs the same?" NSN told ConnectedPlanet. In future, NSN's Flexigrid technology will allow its DWDM system to adapt to even higher speeds, including 400Gbps in future.

The interface between the two vendors' equipment conformed to IEEE 802.3 BA standards, which were ratified last June. This would allow the NSN product to work with other complaint routers, not just Juniper's, though the two partners will sell their combination as a readymade package.
