Mass uptake of machine-to-machine services by large corporations will rely on international roaming and support networks, and major European carriers are rising to the challenge. TeliaSonera has joined an alliance set up earlier this year by France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom, expanding their combined M2M footprint to 12 countries.
The addition of the Nordic operators extends the platform to Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Estonia and Lithuania, in addition to the existing DT/FT territories of France, Germany, Benelux and the UK. The partnership replaces the bilateral roaming deals of the conventional mobile world with multilateral agreements for M2M, making the services more attractive to multinational customers.
The three firms will also cooperate on troubleshooting and customer support, reflecting the mission critical nature of many M2M networks. The trio will also work together to harmonize standards for modules and interconnects and use their combined weight to influence global standard setting.
"With this agreement, now three groups are significantly pushing the boundaries of the M2M ecosystem," said Orange's Anne-Marie Thiollet. "Global availability and reliability will spur the commercial adoption of M2M services and stimulate new innovations to the forefront."
