Alcatel-Lucent has been enjoying steady growth at the edge of the carrier network with its revamped router range, but now it is attacking Cisco head-on in the heart of the core. It recently launched its next generation platform, which will appear in its products next year, and has now scored a major win with China Telecom, confirming the threat to Cisco, Juniper and even Huawei.

China Telecom will use ALU's 100Gbps platform, the 7750 Service Router (together with the 5620 Service Aware Manager), to power a full upgrade of its infrastructure, to support faster broadband services and a data-intensive core network for its 3G mobile systems.

The vendor, via its Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell subsidiary, said it ranked first in China Telecom's IP procurement, given it much improved foothold in the huge country, which accounts for more than 40% of all new broadband connections, whether wired or wireless.

ALU has also successfully completed a trial of its 100Gbps 1830 Photonic Service Switch with Mobily, the Saudi Arabian mobile operator owned by UAE giant Etisalat.

It's been a good month so far for European vendors in China. Nokia Siemens has announced a deal with China Unicom for a 40Gbps-capable optical network, with upgrade capability to 100Gbps in future.
