Asus Eee Pad Transformer hits 400,000 shipments a month
Cheaper and better spec'd than the iPad 2, not surprisingly it's doing quite well

It seems safe to call the Asus Eee Pad a success as a report from DigiTimes indicates that monthly shipments of the tablet have hit the 400,000 unit milestone. The Transformer can effectively be turned into a laptop with the addition of an optional keyboard but has largely succeed as a tablet because of its low price. The Transformer was one of the first tablets that undercut the iPad's price and still remains one of the most affordable slates out there.
Asus also hopes to reach 500,000 shipments a month this quarter with sources saying that the company has ordered as many as 4 - 4.5m units for the second half of the year. Back in June it was said that Asus was expected to ship 300,000 units with a total of 400,000 which had shipped in April and May. If correct this shows a steady increase in the popularity of the Transformer and could well mean that Asus hits its target for units shipped this year.
As well as being cheaper than the iPad 2 it offers some not just equal, but better specs. Below the 10.1" display there's an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, 1GB of RAM and a choice of 16GB or 32GB of internal memory. Prices for the Transformer start at $399 for the 16GB model, meaning that even with the $149 keyboard dock it's still only marginally more expensive than the iPad 2.
According to another recent report the Eee Pad Transformer is expected to ship 750 - 900 units in Q3 but will face stiff competition from Amazon's unreleased devices with an estimated supply volume of 1m - 1.2m in the same period.
It is believed that the tablet is made by Pegatron Technology, a fact which is attributed to the company's recent 51.7% growth in revenue.
