It was one of the first tablets to be released after Apple's iPad, though given its small form factor it was seen by many as an oversized smartphone and never really managed to overcome its identity crisis, but now after a year on the market Dell has officially called it a day for the little tablet that couldn't. Initially well received by the critics it never inspired the public to go out in their droves to pick this one up, even a refresh of the device late last year which delivered the device in a range of colours wasn't enough to save it.
The announcement was a quiet one with Dell simply posting the farewell message "Goodbye, Streak 5. It's been a great ride" on the Streak's product page.
With a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage the Streak was a fairly well spec'd device but clearly couldn't compete with the more pocketable smartphones or the larger tablets.
In the US the Streak's journey was a bumpy one and after a delayed launch the tablet fell under fire after accusations that it violated the terms of the GNU public license. It also received criticism for its awkward size, a problem which was solved by the 7" version but that tablet also had it's fair share of flaws, including an upgrade to Honeycomb that still hasn't arrived.
It isn't all over for the Streak brand though as the 7" model which went sale earlier this year is still available. A 10" Streak has also been long rumoured though the device has failed to materialise in the west as of yet. Last month it was finally spotted in photographs and has since been released in China. Accessories are still available for the 5" Streak from Dell's website but if you want to get the tablet itself it's going to take some hunting online.
