After the failure of the PSP Go, and the lukewarm reception of the Xperia Play, Sony will be delivering its next portable gaming device later this year and this week it has been confirmed Japan is getting it first in December. While the Vita is purely a gaming device, unlike the Xperia Play which was a smartphone which combined elements of Sony's PSP, it will offer a 3G radio allowing users not to be limited to Wi-Fi hotspots.

Its primary function may not be to make calls but the PS Vita is going to come packed with some specs which will put many smartphones to shame. Topping the bill is a 1.5GHz quad-core processor accompanied by a large 5" display. Other key features include front and rear facing cameras, a three-axis gryoscope, accelerometer and electronic compass.

While it will go on sale December 17 Sony will start taking pre-orders from October 15. As an added incentive to pick one of these up in Japan Sony will deliver the first five hundred units sold with one hundred free hours of 3G. If you're not one of the lucky one's the 3G connectivity won't come cheap setting customers back ¥4,980 ($65) for one hundred hours of internet access.

Though the PSP Go and Xperia Play may not have lived up to the hype the PSP Vita looks like it has a pretty good chance of dominating the portable gaming market. Nintendo's 3DS may have delivered a 3D screen but the Vita offers much more impressive hardware with mobile internet access making it a more attractive offering, despite its higher price tag. It will also launch with a stronger line up of games with 26 titles due to be available on its release.

US gamers will have to wait until next year to get their hands on the device which is set to go on sale for $249.99 and AT&T will be the carrier offering it with 3G connectivity.
