It looks like this week will see Amazon's first tablet officially unveiled to the world as invites have been sent out to a press event in New York on September 28. While the invites don't say what it is Amazon is unveiling it's a safe bet that it will be the long awaited tablet which could well be the first to offer the iPad some serious competition.

Recent reports suggest that although the online retailer has two tablets in the works, the 7" Coyote and 10" quad-core Hollywood, it's going to be the smaller device which is released first. If it does well it is said that Amazon will release the larger tablet in 2012.

Amazon has remained tight lipped up until now about the specs of each tablet but it looks like the Coyote is opting for less impressive hardware but a price tag which is considerably cheaper than the iPad. It is expected to cost less than $250, about half the price of the cheapest iPad 2. Rumoured specs include a single-core processor and 6GB of internal storage but where it will hit a homerun is in the range of services it offers including music downloads and video on demand.

Since its release in 2010 over 29m iPads have been sold, meaning Amazon has quite a way to catch up on Apple's near two-year head start. Some analysts reckon however that it could achieve up to 3-5m sales of the 7" tablet before the end of 2011.

As the success and increasing popularity of e-readers has shown consumers seem to be more interested in affordable but functional devices rather than devices that offer the best specs for a higher price tag.

More will be revealed this Wednesday and it shouldn't be too long before it gets released, leaving many Kindles neglected this holiday season.
