Kindle Fire and iPad - Both tablets, both different
Published: 7 October, 2011
As Apple bemoans the loss of its founder, other companies, particularly Amazon are forging ahead with a tablet in the Kindle Fire which has many attractions - and if it keeps selling for a whole month at the current rate of 50,000 units a day, it will outsell the first Apple iPad in its launch period.
Sales of tablets have been forecast by the great and the mighty as if everyone on the planet would have a tablet in just a few years, but at current rates, and especially as many tablet products disappoint and may potentially be withdrawn, there are few that are fit for purpose.
The problem is that Apple is hoovering up all the high end commercial demand, and lower priced products have just looked like shabby copies of the iPad, until now. We even have an issue with there being any such device category as a Tablet - what we have in the iPad and in the Kindle Fire is are two experiences which get you closer to multiple forms of content. What we have in most other devices on the market are copies of Apple's device, without the same attention being made to the provision of content.
The net result is that Apple continues to gain share in a market that is smaller than everyone thought, and although Amazon will join it, the $199 offering is very different - lighter, cheaper with more content options and less overall function as a device, so it will not depose Apple. So the Kindle Fire will sell and the iPad2 will sell and technically they are two different things. Only Android devices can offer any content source close to being as broad as Apple's or Amazon's (which is of course an Android device but with Amazon content ), but none so far look good enough to make a dent in sales for this Christmas.
