There's good news for anyone looking forward to the arrival of quad-core chips in tablets today as Asus has previewed the Transformer Prime before its official launch. Successor to the original Transformer which was one of the first reasonably priced slates it will now be one of the first to feature Nvidia's quad-core Kal-El processor. The news comes from an interview given by ASUS CEO Jonney Shih at the AsiaD conference in Hong Kong.
Apart from the iPad 2 many of the tablet headlines this year have been concerned with Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1, even though Asus's Transformer has been a success in its own right and not managed to offend Apple's lawyers.
Not much has been revealed about the exact specifications of the tablet but its brief appearance in the interview confirms that it's going to be an incredibly thin 8.3mm. In the video it was running Honeycomb though there's a good chance it will find itself with Android 4.0 installed instead before its release.
Like the previous device it comes with an optional detachable keyboard turning the tablet seamlessly into a laptop and also features a 10" display.
Other tidbits include that fact that there will be a battery in both the tablet and the keyboard part of the device adding up to a potential 16.5 hours of battery life. The news follows the release of a short teaser video for the tablet earlier in the week.
Also revealed in the interview were plans to launch the company's PadFone in 2012 complete with Ice Cream sandwich. The PadFone is a hybrid of a tablet and a smartphone where the handset docks inside the slate.
An official launch is expected to take place on November 9 though there's no indication if pricing or availability will be revealed at this time.
