Intel is the latest vendor to embrace NFC contactless payment technology to enhance its own platform. Google and RIM have done the same to bolster the appeal of Android and BlackBerry, while Intel's new alliance with MasterCard aims to interest consumers and merchants in its new Ultrabook thin-PC platform.
The new partners claim they will streamline the check-out process for NFC-based payments, but also for online purchases, and will enhance security. A reader will be available for Ultrabooks, which will enable consumers to make web purchases by tapping an NFC smartcard or handset, in the same way as they make swipe-based payments in physical stores. This would offer a very quickly online buying process for Ultrabook users, which is enabled by MasterCard's NFC-based PayPass and Intel's Identity Protection Technology (IPT).
The latter provides the security element, supporting two-factor authentication and hardware-based display protection, which provides increased protection against malware. The combination indicates the recognition that new form factors will only take off if they have unique and attractive services included. "The collaboration with Intel will deliver enhanced security and faster checkout - with the convenience of a simple click or tap," said Ed McLaughlin, chief emerging payments officer at MasterCard.
