Long rumoured and then made official in August the Sony P tablet has arrived in the UK bringing its unique form factor to the market following the release of the company's more conventional S slate in September. The device is one of the few dual-screen tablets out there and probably the most notable though the quirky design comes at a premium. At £499.99 ($810) it costs £100 more than the cheapest iPad but in terms of the P's specs, and the overall surface area of its screens, the device is fairly competitive.
Its key feature is the two 5.5" displays which can function independently or be used together to create one large screen. When closed its form factor may be smaller than most other tablets out there but it still packs an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor backed up by 1GB of RAM under the hood. Internal storage is a low 1GB but this can be expanded with a microSD card and it also comes with a front-facing VGA webcam as well as a rear-facing 5mp camera. It ships with Android 3.2 installed and is powered by a lithium ion battery which is expected to last for 7 hours.
Like the S Slate before it the P comes with Sony PlayStation certification meaning users will be able to exclusively download titles originally released for the company's console.
Currently Dixons is offering the tablet in the UK but at £500 it seems like too much of an oddity to make much of an impact on the market. It's always good to see innovative form factors but there are much better deals out there for consumers aren't bothered about a more compact tablet.
The smartphone world has been quicker to catch on with the dual-screen design and has already seen several models released such as the Kyocera Echo which offers two displays in a similar clamshell style to the Sony P.
