A new target for Apple's lawyers will be released in China early in the new year, the Meizu MX. Now completely official the phone offers some impressive specs and will precede a quad-core model which is set to be released in January 2012. The name 'MX' derives from the letters for the Chinese word for dream "Meng Xiang" and for western smartphone lovers that's all it will remain as there doesn't appear to be any plans to officially release it in the US.
Key specs of the handset include a 4" display with an "ideal" 3:2 aspect ratio, dual-core 1.4GHz processor and 1GB of RAM. There's 16GB of internal storage in the model that will ship in January but a 32GB model is due to be released at a later date. Also included is a rear-facing 8mp camera, front-facing 0.3mp webcam and a physical home button rather than the rumoured trackpad.
Initially the handset is going to ship with a heavily modified version of Android 2.3.5, aka Meizu's Flyme OS, but an update to Ice Cream Sandwich has been promised in the future. The MX offers pentaband 3G connectivity with HSPA+ so anyone who manages to procure the handset outside of its native China will be able to use it with the help of a micro SIM.
While dual-core is all well and good Meizu has more impressively promised a quad-core handset though when that particular device will arrive is a bit of a mystery.

At the time of its announcement pricing and availability were unknown but it has now been confirmed that the 16GB is set to arrive on January 1st and will cost 2,999 CNY ($469). The Previous Meizu handset, the M9, never made it to a carrier in the US but was sold through a special site for the phone where it shipped worldwide. There doesn't appear to be any such site for the MX as of yet.
