Symbian name retired, say hello to Nokia Belle

Brand name ditched as shaky rumours go mainstream of Tango devices

There's rarely much good news for Symbian fans these days and the latest development from the Finnish giant is no exception. The company has unceremoniously ditched the Symbian brand name in favour of calling the latest version of the OS Nokia Belle. Every cloud has a silver lining though and it's also been revealed that the newly crowned Nokia Belle is going to be released for handsets including the N8, E7, E6, X7, C6-01, C7 and Oro in February next year.

Nokia Belle offers several improvements over the current version of the OS including six instead of three homescreens, better web browsing and five different sizes of widgets, among other things. Several Belle running devices were launched earlier this year including the Nokia 700, 701 and 603. It's also been reported that Nokia's popular N8 is now shipping with Belle pre-installed, starting in China and then making its way to other markets.

Meanwhile some rumours have hit the web indicating when Windows Phone fans can expect to see some new handsets running the next build of OS and get the Tango update. According to the blog which is the source of the speculation Tango will be revealed and released alongside two new handsets at CES on January 13 with an update to follow over the following months. The new devices will be the Lumia 900, which has already been spotted in an official Nokia video, and a device called the Lumia 710. Although the rumours should be greeted with a very high raised eyebrow a Tango release in January doesn't seem unlikely and it has already been said that the Lumia 900 will arrive in the US early in the new year.

So there it is, some possible good news for Windows Phone fans, and some disappointing news for Symbian lovers. One thing's for sure, in 2012 Symbian will become a distant memory as Nokia and Windows push ahead with their alliance.
