Motorola Mobility is to add Wi-Fi solutions to its cableco offering, but is working with BelAir Networks rather than the WLan products of its former stablemate Motorola Solutions.
The handset and set-top unit will resell BelAir’s outdoor Wi-Fi products, which are already used by cablecos like Cablevision and can be strand mounted and integrated with LTE or 3G. It has exclusive rights to resell these products on a worldwide basis under its own label, except in BelAir’s key cable accounts (Comcast, Cablevision, Time Warner Cable and Bright House). The deal will help the smaller company penetrate non-US markets courtesy of Motorola’s distribution network.
Motorola Mobility’s VP of strategy and business development, John Holobinko, said the firm did evaluate Motorola Solutions' MotoMesh products but found BelAir’s were better established with MSOs. It offers picocells that can allow cablecos to host LTE backhaul and also support their own outdoor Wi-Fi services.
