There have been plenty rumours circulating about the iPad 3 though most have been about what form the next device will take, big or small, and when it's going to arrive rather than its specs. The latest talk that suggests what to expect from the next generation tablet comes from the editor of iLounge Jeremy Horowitz revealing a little more about its hardware. It seems natural that the speculation should become feverish so close to the biggest tech event of the year and Horowitz supposed specs do seem plausible.
Firstly it's said that iPad 3 will offer the much anticipated retina display, no surprises there, but there's also the news that it's going to come with a camera equal to that of the iPhone 4S, which could mean an 8mp snapper. As well as this the front-facing camera is expected to get HD support opening up the possibility of HD Face Time video calling. There is a very slight downside though if it's all true as the extra components could mean the tablet being 1mm thicker than the current model.
The most interesting part of the rumour however is that of the price. While there's been plenty of talk of a smaller iPad with a 7.85" display a more likely scenario has always seemed that as with the iPhone Apple will continue to sell the iPad 2 but at a reduced price to stay competitive with the likes of the Kindle Fire.
At $399, which seems the most likely price, it would still seem significantly more expensive compared to the Kindle Fire but as the iPhone reductions have proved such a price cut can still be enough to attract a new wave of customers. It has also been suggested that Apple could offer an 8GB version for an even more attractive $299, which still seems a lot more plausible than the iPad Mini.
Finally the iPad 3 is expected to be launched in March, when hopefully the existence of a smaller iPad will be confirmed or denied.
