In November a few details leaked about a quad-core Acer tablet, not many, but just enough to confirm the existence of the speedy Iconia branded A700. Now at the start of a week which will see details of many rumoured tablets officially revealed Acer has been showing off the Iconia A700 at CES and confirming a few more details about the internal hardware of the slate. It's shaping up to be a device which should sit comfortably alongside the Transformer Prime with a similar premium status.
As expected the A700 is going to offer an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor and a screen with a 1920x1200 resolution which has now been confirmed to be a 10.1" display. In addition to this there's 1GB of RAM onboard and a good selection of ports including microUSB, microSD and HDMI. It won't challenge Toshiba's Excite X10 in the skinny tablet stakes at 9.8mm but at around 650g it's not going to weigh anyone down too much.
Aside from the quad-core processor the A700 also distinguishes itself by coming with Ice Cream Sandwich installed. It's not a stock version of the OS however and will come with a few of Acer's own customisations including the Acer Ring as well as some special widgets.
No release has been mentioned yet but Acer is expected to release the device in the second quarter. Price is also an unknown but it wouldn't be surprising to see it sell for around the same price as the similarly spec'd Transformer Prime. Of course by the time it launches it probably won't be so special for having ICS installed but the specs should still impress.
Just because the A700 is a premium slate doesn't mean Acer is planning on forsaking budget tablet fans this year and this month will see it release the more modestly spec'd 10" A200 in the US for around $329.
