As promised in its CES announcement Verizon has reduced the price of the 16GB black version of the Droid Razr to $199 on a two-year contract. The reduction is thanks to the announcement of the Razr Maxx which offers the same specs as its less powerful brother, which was only released in November, but with a vastly improved battery life. While Verizon revealed the new handset and pricing point for the old one at CES it was reluctant to name a release date, there's now more evidence that it won't be long before the Razr Maxx hits its stores.

Aside from the incredible 21 hours of battery life the Razr Maxx is said to deliver, and the added thickness the larger power pack brings, the key specs are the same as its less powerful sibling. Beneath a 4.3" display there's a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. However the new lower priced version of the Razr has made a concession in the storage department and will now come with just 16GB of internal storage rather than the 32GB it came with previously.

The Maxx with its extra battery capacity comes at a premium however replacing the Razr at the $299.99 mark. A recent typo which was spotted on Verizon's website suggested that the Maxx is going to be available from January 26 but a special Razr Maxx event planned for February 6 might point to later release date. The 24 hour event will see the Maxx put to the test to prove it really delivers all the talk time Motorola promises.

Meanwhile the Razr isn't the only Droid to get its price slashed and the Droid 3 has also received similar treatment. As with the Razr it's expected this means that its successor, the Droid 4, is well on its way to the carrier.
