Rumours have abounded recently that the Galaxy SIII won't be on show at the Mobile World Congress this month and it looks like they were true. According to Tech Radar Samsung has confirmed that the much anticipated device won't be launched at this month's show but at a separate event specifically for the handset closer to its release. The event will be held in the first half of the year suggesting that the delay won't be too long.
There's some speculation as to why the phone has been delayed and it's a toss up between manufacturing problems and a strategic move to go head to head with the next version of the iPhone which is expected to arrive in July. Either sounds plausible and the Galaxy SIII does carry an increasing amount of clout which could threaten Apple's device. It's also been suggested that the company doesn't want to leave such a big gap between the phone's announcement and its release in the US, as it did last year.
What Samsung didn't confirm was what kind of specs are going to be featured when it does arrive. The rumour mill still has it that the phone is going to come packed with a quad-core processor and rear-facing 12mp camera. Apart from that not much is known that seems plausible for the next-generation quad-core handset.
Whatever the specifics of the hardware turn out to be it's guaranteed to improve upon the still impressive Galaxy SII. If the mid-year release is true then there's also guaranteed to be a hype-off between Apple and Samsung.
The news may be disappointing for Samsung handset fans but the company did recently announce the Galaxy S Advance, a device which is really the Galaxy S 1.5, offering some specs which sit between the original handset and the Galaxy SII. It's no SIII but should make for a more affordable Galaxy S experience.
