It was released only two weeks ago at T-Mobile but already the price of the Lumia 710 has been slashed. Although it wasn't that expensive to start with costing just $49.99 on a contract the phone now finds itself with a $10 reduction. It's certainly not as major as some price cuts but considering that's one fifth of the price it's fairly significant, especially given the way the efforts of Nokia and Microsoft's collaboration are being so closely watched in the US.
The latest news may offer more ammunition for Windows Phone haters and comes not long after Nokia announced its Q4 results for 2011. In them the company claimed to have sold "well over 1m Lumia devices to date". Sceptics pointed out that this figure is closer to around 500k - 700k which isn't terrible but also isn't the success that the company was hoping for and needs.
Such an early reduction won't help to dispel rumours of slow sales but on the other hand it's good news for WP7 fans and an even more affordable handset should hopefully boost sales.
Although it's not the most well spec'd device out there the Lumia 710 does offer some respectable hardware in an appealing form factor. Internal hardware includes a 3.7" display, 1.4GHz single-core processor and 512MB of RAM. There's also 8GB of internal storage and a 5mp rear-facing camera rounding out the specs.
The real star of the Nokia/Windows Phone show is set to arrive in March at AT&T in the form of the Lumia 900. With a 4.3" display, 16GB of internal storage and a front as well as a rear-facing camera encased in an elegant polycarbonate shell it's certainly a lust-worthy device. It also promises to be aggressively priced.
For anyone convinced to take a chance on the handset by the $10 reduction it's available now from T-Mobile though the $39.99 price-tag is after a $50 mail-in rebate.
