Last year saw Microsoft release its 7.5 update for Windows Phone which brought several welcome improvements to the OS making up for a few shortcomings. There are better things to come though for the Redmond Giant's platform as not only is Tango yet to be released but several intriguing details have leaked regarding the more major Windows Phone 8 update. Codenamed 'Apollo' it will be more closely integrated with the new desktop version of Windows which is due out later this year.
The three biggest improvements which WP8 is said to bring are support for multi-core processors, multiple resolutions and NFC. Also very welcome is the inclusion of compatibility with microSD card slots, a small point perhaps but definitely another advantage over iOS. The Zune app which currently allows users to sync data between their phones and PC is a goner and will be replaced with a "dedicated companion application", according to Pocket Now.
Other promising new additions include app-to-app communication, improved security features and Internet Explorer 10. For business users it will introduce 'line-of-business' apps which can be deployed behind company firewalls.
Although sales have been slow for Windows Phone devices it's not a reflection on the OS and seems to have more to do with the way it's being marketed. The main flaw it has at the moment is a lack of apps compared to Android and iOS but the number is increasing all the time and it's said in the leaked details that apps on the Windows Phone marketplace will total 100,000 by the time WP8 is released. However it isn't clear whether old WP7 apps are going to be compatible with the new version of the OS.
With WP8 expected in the fourth quarter this year there's plenty of time for more leaks and details to change. Hopefully these latest details will remain true as the new OS sounds like it could really help to close the gap between Windows Phone and its rivals.
