Last it week it was rumoured that the Droid 4 was due to be released on February 9, a rumour which was nearly spot on as Verizon has confirmed that the long awaited handset will touchdown in stores this Friday February 10. Joining the ranks of the carrier's 4G LTE handsets the device features similar hardware to the Droid Razr but with the addition of a slideout keyboard. Since it was first believed to be arriving in December it has been preceded by the aforementioned Razr and the Droid Xyboard (aka Xoom 2) tablets.
Below its 4" qHD display the Droid 4 offers a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. There's an 8mp snapper on the back as well a front-facing camera but the main selling point of the device is its status as Verizon's first 4G LTE device to come with a slideout keyboard. Unfortunately Ice Cream Sandwich isn't native to it shipping with Android 2.3.5 installed but an upgrade is promised in the future. Although it comes with its own keyboard the handset is compatible with Motorola's Lapdock 500, offering an optional 14" display and full-sized keyboard.
The announcement also confirms the fact that the phone is going to go on sale for $199.99 with a two-year contract. This was long thought to be the cased and seemed even more likely when the similarly spec'd Droid Razr got its priced slashed following the announcement of the Razr Maxx. It should be welcome news to potential customers as aside from a faster processor and more RAM the handset isn't that different to the Droid 3.
Verizon's release of the Droid 4 coincides with a number of offers the most relevant of which is the resurrection of its double data promotion. As of Friday the carrier is also going to be running a buy-one-get-one-free deal on the Razr and Razr Maxx.
