Thanks to chinatimes.com the news has leaked that Amazon is approaching Foxconn to manufacture its second Kindle Fire tablet. While Quanta will continue to produce the original Kindle Fire Foxconn looks set to build the next generation device. Unlike Amazon's deal with Quanta the retailer is going to be in charge of selecting the components this time rather than rushing a ready-made device to the market.
Rumours of a follow-up to the Kindle Fire have been around since the first whispers of the tablet emerged and if it stays true to the speculated hardware it may find itself with a 10" display and quad-core processor. Fancy specs are all well and good but one of the major problems with the current model is that it only offers 8GB of storage with no microSD card slot for expansion, so hopefully this will be addressed.
However this latest Kindle news seems to pertain to another 7" device which is going to be cheaper than the current version. While this might not be the best news for the internal hardware, though this will depend on how well Amazon chooses its components, it could be good news for those looking for an affordable tablet.
It's common knowledge that the company sells each Kindle Fire for a loss, they cost around $249 to make and sell for $199, so it would only mean good things for Amazon and its customers if it brings this cost down.
Although there's much to be confirmed about the next tablet from Amazon its looks very likely that it's going to go head to head with the next version of the iPad and is rumoured to be launching around May/June. The first Kindle Fire has already proved a big success, if not an iPad killer, and now that the company has dipped its toes in the tablet waters it will be interesting to see how it makes the new slate more competitive.
