Anyone eagerly waiting for the day they can mark the release of HTC's Evo 4G on their calendars may want to pencil in May 18. The rumour which puts the release of the handset in the middle of next month first appeared last week but has since been confirmed by a source within the carrier who's preferring to remain nameless. While Android and Me claims the source is reliable it also points out that Friday seems like an odd day to make it available considering other recent big handsets such as the Galaxy Nexus and LG Viper went on sale on a Sunday.

Key features of the HTC Evo 4G LTE include a 4.7" HD 720p Super LCD display, 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM. As well as this there's 16GB of internal storage and an 8mp rear-facing camera in addition to a 1.3mp front-facing one for video calling. Rounding out the specs are Beats Audio integration, NFC connectivity and Android 4.0. Fans of the Evo range may also be glad to see the return of the kickstand on the rear.

Earlier this month Sprint officially launched the HTC Evo 4G LTE declaring May 7 as the day it's set to go up for pre-order. The carrier has already put the page up early allowing eager customers to be notified when it becomes available on the 7th. When the sales of the Evo 4G LTE begin Sprint customers can expect to pay $199 for it on a two year contract. Until the May 18 date is confirmed or denied by the carrier sometime in Q2 is still the official window for the handset's release.

Whatever day it hits stores on it's certainly not going to beat AT&T's One X to market, with the Evo 4G LTE being Sprint's equivalent to that handset, which is due to be released before the Evo's pre-orders being on May 6.
