Mini iPhone rumours resurface
'iPhone nano' rumoured for release this year, more details on the next regular-sized iPhone

The rumours of Apple developing smaller devices don't show any sign of going away soon and this week it's the turn of the smaller iPhone to step into the spotlight again. This time the whispers come from the direction of Chinese website China Times where a source within Apple's supply chain is to blame for the latest outburst.
While talk of a smaller iPhone has been present since the handset was first released with the ever increasing competition from affordable Android devices it makes sense that if Apple was going to make such a move it would make it now.
According to the report the handset is going to be released later this year and would see Apple expanding its portfolio to tackle the lower end of the market. Although the older generation iPhones are still available for a reduced price they still don't come close to competing with the multitudes of affordable Android devices.
There are no new details on what kind of hardware it might feature and it's still very much in the rumour stage but an iPhone nano seems a lot more likely than a smaller iPad which is also believed by some to be arriving this year.
One thing which is certain is that a new regular-sized iPhone is going to be released at some point in 2012. Speculation indicates that it's going to have a larger screen, to keep up with other smartphone makers that are showing there's a demand for big displays. If other talk from inside Apple's supply chain is true, this time from Digi Times, then it may be packing in-cell technology making for a thinner handset.
The technology means touch sensors are placed inside the colour filters instead of above them and could be good news for companies experienced in this field such as Sony, Sharp and Toshiba.
