It seems that wherever there's a rumour about Samsung's next flagship, one about the next iPhone is never far behind. That's the case this week as no sooner did a fresh rumour spring up about the Galaxy S IV than DigiTimes was found to be reporting that Apple fans can expect a new handset and a new tablet to launch in the middle of next year.
The news is surprising to say the least, as it would see Apple significantly shortening its product cycle, but then if the new Galaxy handset is also headed for an early launch then it could be the start of a new trend.
That's assuming the news is true of course and DigiTimes doesn't have the best track record. The source of the rumour is anonymous market observers and while they give a window for its launch there's no indication of what to expect from the new iPhone or the new iPad. It would mean that the new iPad launch would possibly take place only 8 months after the launch of the current iPad, 9 after the current iPhone.
However it's not the first time that an earlier than usual announcement of a new iPhone has been suggested. Earlier this month its was claimed that Apple planned to start a trial production run of the iPhone 5S in December to avoid the same problems it has faced in making the iPhone 5. It was not said when it would be launching exactly only that Apple would make it official sometime in the first half of 2013.
If the Samsung Galaxy S IV scuttlebutt pans out it would make the mid-2013 iPhone launch seem more likely, and there's only two months to go to find out if it's real.
