Ericsson and Qualcomm address signalling storm

Test chipsets supporting three 3GPP features which should reduce small but frequent data bursts and save battery

Modern smartphone usage is not all about huge YouTube files. Devices and networks also have to cope with constant streams of small items, such as push emails alerts or social media updates. The 'signalling storm' these create has sparked outages at several carriers and vendor investment in technologies to ease the strain on the network and the device battery. Ericsson and Qualcomm are the first to test 3GPP standards designed to address the issue.

They have conducted network and chipset tests on three technologies - HS FACH, E-FACH and UE DRX. Together, this trio will help reduce signalling traffic and improve the user experience.

Up to 60% of data bursts in mobile networks are less than one kilobyte, says Ericsson. HS FACH, E-FACH and UE DRX enable operators to handle these small data bursts more efficiently. The first two improve downlink and uplink respectively, reducing signalling, improving bandwidth capacity and providing a faster experience for the end user.The UE DRX feature saves device battery power. Together, they can boost response time by two to four times.
