Dutch court rules against Apple in tablet case
Samsung did not infringe the iPad's design patents, and Apple did not invent the rounded rectangle

A Dutch court has followed in the footsteps of a UK case, finding Samsung not guilty of infringing Apple's iPad design patents with its Galaxy tablets.
Wednesday's ruling by a district court in The Hague said that the rounded corners of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, 8.9 and 7.7 did not infringe the design patents, which the iPhone maker had controversially cited in a string of actions in various European centers.
Samsung told Reuters: "We continue to believe that Apple was not the first to design a tablet with a rectangular shape and rounded corners and that the origins of Apple's registered design features can be found in numerous examples."
Last October, Apple lost a similar case at the UK High Court in London, which also centered on the rounded rectangle shape. That ruling required the iOS giant to run adverts on its website and in some newspapers acknowledging the loss of the case, but instead ran a statement criticizing the decision. After various other disputes, it had to pay Samsung's legal fees in the UK for running a "false and misleading" statement on its site.
