Amazon has become a hugely disruptive force in devices with its aggressive tablet pricing and alternative Android platform.. Its next move may be to launch a high definition Kindle Fire for just $99, throwing down yet another gauntlet to Google.
Google launched its own Nexus 7 tablet, offering a comparable product to Amazon's for the same $199 base price, as it tried to defend its own Android user experience from the retailer's very different one, which includes integrated access to all its stores. That means that content and purchases, not hardware profits, sit at the heart of Kindle's success, and could enable Amazon to push the price tag down to rockbottom.
According to the TechCrunch blog, a 7-inch Kindle tablet is already on the production line and could ship later this year. Its sources indicate the device would run on a Texas Instruments embedded chip and have the same 1280x800 resolution screen as the current model. Amazon recently reduced the prices on its 8.9-inch tablets.
Currently, the Kindle Fire HD sells for $199, and its non-HD predecessor is from $159. However, a spokesman for Amazon said a $99 tablet was "not happening - we are already at the lowest price points possible for that hardware".
