Samsung takes new steps towards full app store

Rather than unleashing a high profile, global app store like Apple or Nokia, Samsung is taking a step-by-step approach to the booming business of mobile software. So far it has trialled a store in the UK and shown off an advanced video-focused shop including full length movies. Now it has added the Application Seller Site portal, a channel for developers to offer their Symbian and Windows Mobile apps for Samsung's handsets.
This portal will be open for content providers to sign up their apps over the coming weeks, in readiness for the Europe-wide launch of the Samsung Application Store in September. The Korean vendor has other stores geared to its home market in Korea and other territories, but has been behind the game in terms of a US and/or consistent global store. Its task is complicated by the large number of software platforms it still supports - all three major multivendor OSs, plus a range of its own systems for high end and midrange phones.
Developers can sign up for membership of the new site for $1. As they register relevant apps or content, including suggested price and target markets, their software is filtered through a back end system and then promoted for download via the app store site. Seller Site will also enable developers to purchase sales contracts and check their certification status in real time, and it offers sales records and revenue totals, and handles billing and payment.
The new seller site works alongside the existing Mobile Innovator developer support program, which offers features such as test handsets, early access to new features and forums.
