Nokia joins internet security initiative
Published: 25 September, 2009
Nokia has lent its weight to the 15-month old Industry Consortium for Advancement of Security on the Internet (ICASI), bringing a much-needed mobile focus to this low profile but important initiative. The handset giant joins founding members Cisco, IBM, Intel, Juniper Networks and Microsoft.
"To effectively address multivendor security challenges wherever they strike, the world needs the commitment and cooperation of technology leaders like Nokia," said Linda Betz, president of ICASI, in a statement. "Nokia brings a wealth of essential mobile telecoms and global security expertise to ICASI as we work together to drive excellence and innovation in security response practices."
Janne Uusilehto, head of Nokia product security, added; "For many the mobile phone is an essential part of our everyday life. The next transformation will come when the mobile phone provides truly personalized and useful services that help you get the most out of life. Mobile security places various requirements globally on networks, platforms, servers, hardware, software, systems and procedures."
ICASI aims to be a trusted forum to address international, multi-product security challenges, but has gained few new members since it was founded in June 2008, so Nokia's support may give it a necessary boost in profile.
The group's two main projects to date have been the Unified Security Incident Response Plan, enabling security incident response teams to collaborate to resolve complex, multivendor internet security issues; and the Common Frameworks for Vulnerability Disclosure and Response, which looks to combine existing frameworks into a harmonized one for vulnerability reporting.
