Sony has outlined a mobile and multiscreen future for its PlayStation platform, and will roll out a cross-platform gaming service from this fall.
The firm has been hinting at integrating its various device brands for years, and also at reaching out to non-Sony gadgets. It already offers PlayStation content for selected Android partners. However, now it has full control of the handset unit it formerly shared with Ericsson, it will step up its plans to bring that unit's Xperia handsets closer to the PlayStation, especially the handheld Vita.
The PlayStation Mobile platform will be available in nine countries including Japan, the US and Canada, with other countries to follow. Previously called the PlayStation Suite, it will allow third party developers and publishers to create new content, especially but not entirely games, for portable devices.
The Japanese giant, whose traditional strengths in gaming are under threat from the rise in game playing on Apple and Android handsets, also announced that Asustek and Wikipad have joined its PlayStation Certified licence program. They will be able to provide users of their tablets and other devices with access to PlayStation Mobile content.
New CEO Kaz Hirai put multiscreen content, mobility and imaging at the heart of the turnaround plan he laid out recently, after a string of bad results for the firm, and also plans to invest in new businesses such as the medical sector.
