US retailer Best Buy has confirmed that its plans to offer own-branded mobile broadband services - announced last month - will rely on a deal with Clearwire. The company is emulating Japanese electronics retailers, which are increasingly offering their wireless gadgets complete with WiMAX connections, and will include WiMAX in its Best Buy Connect offering.
Best Buy is ambitious about the wireless market, and has already announced initiatives in mobile applications, devices and music. Initially, Connect offered 3G connectivity, using the CDMA network of Clearwire stakeholder Sprint, and is now adding 4G too.
"Our strategic wholesale agreement with Clearwire will enable Best Buy Connect to leverage the Clearwire 4G network's speed and bandwidth to deliver compelling new mobile broadband experiences for our customers," Jed Stillman, VP of Best Buy Connect, said in a statement. "This agreement paves the way to providing one-stop shopping and support for mobile broadband as more people become more connected across all kinds of devices."
This is Clearwire's first major wholesale deal with a company that isn't also a strategic investor, like Sprint and its three cableco partners.
