Two 'any over any' IP forums merge
Published: 22 October, 2008
Industry shake-out is likely to affect standards organizations as well as vendors, with far too many of them fighting over overlapping remits. Two such bodies, the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) Forum and the Next Generation Networks (NGN) Foru, have announced plans to merge.
The two organizations said combining their efforts would better "multimedia, mobility and fixed services over broadband cable, wireless, wireline and fiber networks", as IT, telecoms and media converge. The new IMS/NGN Forum will be chaired by Michael Khalilian.
The IMS Forum tended to focus on smaller vendors and start-ups, while the NGN Forum had a broader membership. The combined body now includes 2,000 executives and technical and marketing professionals across equipment vendors, service providers, system integrators and the government. However, there will still be likely overlap - and consequent political manoeuvring - with other bodies' activities. These include the TM Forum, the SIP Forum, the IP/MPLS Forum and the MultiService Forum, according to Current Analysis.
"The IMS/NGN Forum's charter is broad in scope (basically 'any to any' over IP) and as such covers the whole gambit of quadruple play, revenue generating services and applications," says a Current Analysis research note.
