Clearwire News
Clearwire was the first mobile broadband carrier in the US, building a WiMAX network in its extensive 2.5GHz spectrum holdings. It is 45% owned by Sprint, which uses the network to support its ‘Sprint 4G’ services, though the cellco is expected to seek full control in future, and to integrate Clearwire with its own Network Vision multi-technology platform. Other investors in Clearwire include three cablecos (Comcast, Time Warner and BrightHouse), which are also MVNO partners, plus Google, Intel and founder Craig McCaw. McCaw’s Clearwire was merged with Sprint’s own mobile broadband unit, Xohm, at the end of 2008, to form a larger operator with a combined spectrum pile that was significantly larger than any rival’s. The company has its own brand, Clear, as well as supporting a range of MVNOs, but has lately come under intense competitive pressure from Verizon’s LTE launch, and a failure to attract further investment. It is now testing TD-LTE as a possible migration path from WiMAX.
