Verizon News
Verizon is one of three main US telcos, which has wireline coverage from New Jersey to Virginia and New York to Maine on the East coast. It is a composite of a number of the local phone companies which once belonged to AT&T. Today Verizon’s cellular business Verizon Wireless was formed from to Bell Atlantic Mobile, Nynex Mobile, Vodafone’s AirTouch Communications, PrimeCo Communications, and GTE Mobilnet. As a result of its contribution Vodafone owns 45% of the business. It has a nationwide footprint and is currently the largest US cellular operator, (104 million users at the end of 2010) though it may be overtaken by AT&T Mobility if its purchase of T-Mobile goes through. Verizon Wireless, like AT&T Mobility has been acquiring smaller rivals and most recently added Alltel in 2009. Verizon uses the same CDMA 2000 technology that Sprint uses, different from the W-CDMA technologies of AT&T and T-Mobile USA.
